Valves and fittings for PVC-C pipes
Developed in 1958 by the company BF Goodrich today LUBRIZOL, PVC-C (superchlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is obtained through the process of chlorination of the resin in suspension of PVC. During the transformation, in the molecular chain of PVC, hydrogen atoms are replaced alternately with chlorine atoms. Through this transformation a resin is obtained which guarantees excellent performance in terms of thermal stability, chemical and mechanical resistance up to temperatures of 100 °C.
In 1986 FIP was the first European company to produce an integrated system of valves, fittings and pipes called TemperFIP100®. The result is a complete system of products for industrial plant engineering. Today the TemperFIP line, thanks to the twenty-year collaboration with the company LUBRIZOL EUROPE, uses for the production of PVC-C pipes, fittings and valves made by extrusion and injection, CORZAN™ PVC-C resins, specifically formulated for industrial applications.
Characteristics of PVC-C
PVC-C resins also offer complete compatibility in the transport of water to be made potable, demineralised water and hot thermal waters. The TemperFIP100® PVC-C system represents one of the most economically viable solutions in the field of thermoplastic and metallic materials to solve the problems encountered in process and service lines in the industrial sector for the transport of hot corrosive fluids and in the distribution of domestic hot and cold water. The fundamental reasons for this preference are to be attributed to the peculiar chemical-physical characteristics of PVC-C, among which those listed below can be mentioned.
High chemical resistance
The use of CORZAN™ resins, obtained from homopolymer PVC chlorination processes, ensures high chemical resistance, specifically against strong inorganic acids, organic bases, saline and alkaline solutions and paraffinic hydrocarbons. It is not recommended for use in the transport of polar organic compounds including various types of chlorinated and aromatic solvents. Inertia to electrochemical corrosion ensures high reliability in the transport of domestic hot water in conventional and solar panel systems.
Excellent thermal and mechanical properties
TemperFIP100® PVC-C finds its typical use in the temperature range between 20°C and 85°C with very low thermal expansion coefficients guaranteeing excellent mechanical resistance performance, and the suitability to withstand operating pressures in the order of 10 -16 bar at 20°C. The remarkable thermal stability (VICAT according to EN ISO 15493) associated with an excellent creep behavior (circumferential breaking load according to ASTM D 2837 equal to 1000 PSI 82 °C, 100,000 hours), allow its use up to about 95 °C for particular uses and performances. The reduced coefficient of thermal conductivity (l = 0.16 W/m °C according to ASTM C177) guarantees the virtual elimination of condensation problems and limited heat loss in the transport of hot fluids.
Physical properties PVC-C
PVC-C resins are characterized by low oxygen permeability and low water absorption (0.07% at 23 °C according to ASTM D 570). The physical properties of the material guarantee a high resistance to aging and to the aggression of atmospheric agents (UV radiation) thanks to the presence of titanium dioxide in the compound.
The PVC-C resins guarantee exceptional fire resistance, the flame ignites at 482 °C and persists only in extreme conditions: if the oxygen concentration is 3 times higher than the atmospheric one or only in the presence of a flame coming from an external source. CORZAN™ PVC-C resins are classified VO, 5VB and 5VA according to UL94.
